The streets of German cities have turned orange with the passion of Dutch fans at Euro 2024. Now, their team has delivered a performance to match.
After a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Austria in their final group game, where the Netherlands struggled with their opponents' pressing and intensity, fans feared the worst. But against a spirited Romania, the Dutch produced the kind of display their supporters had been craving, securing a 3-0 victory and a spot in the quarter-finals.
Half-time substitute Donyell Malen scored two late goals, adding to Cody Gakpo's first-half opener. The Dutch missed numerous chances but played high-tempo, fast-paced attacking football, delighting their fans in Munich.
"Welcome to the tournament," said former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson on BBC Radio 5 Live. "Stand up and take notice, everybody. Harsh for Romania, but the Dutch completely outclassed them."
'They Can Actually Go and Win It'
The Netherlands' impressive performance in Munich sends a warning to their Euro 2024 rivals. If they build on this display and advance further, a potential semi-final clash with England or Switzerland awaits.
"That might just be the performance that gives them confidence that they can actually go on and win it," said former England striker Alan Shearer on BBC One. "That could be the performance that gives them that edge."
Ex-England defender Alex Scott noted the Dutch "had a spark and a different energy," while former Wales captain Ashley Williams praised their "complete performance." He added, "You can't call anything in this tournament but I think they will be really confident now."
The Dutch fans are ready for more celebrations, and their team looks poised to keep the party going.
