Being the most followed athlete and a once-in-a-lifetime player has its ups and downs, and for Cristiano Ronaldo, that means fans are more eager to catch him for what could be his final UEFA European Championship.
Ronaldo escaped unscathed after four fans invaded the field for selfies during Portugal's 3-0 win over Turkey on Saturday, according to Portugal coach Roberto Martinez.
The security breaches occurred in the second half at Dortmund's Westfalenstadion. In the 69th minute, a young fan evaded stewards and approached Ronaldo, who posed for a selfie.
However, Ronaldo grew visibly upset when two more fans attempted to do the same in the final minutes. Another fan wearing a Portugal jersey managed to reach Ronaldo for a photo moments after the final whistle.
Two additional fans tried to approach Ronaldo as he walked off the field but were stopped by security.
“It is a concern,” Martinez said. “Today, we were lucky that the fans had good intentions. But if those intentions were wrong, the players are exposed, and we need to be careful. That shouldn't happen on a football pitch.
Martinez emphasized the importance of sending a message that such behaviour is unacceptable.
