Kylian Mbappe, wearing a protective mask, scored his first Euros goal, but France were held to a 1-1 draw by already-eliminated Poland, finishing second in Group D.
France needed a win to top the group, but Robert Lewandowski’s 79th-minute penalty canceled out Mbappe’s spot-kick from the 56th minute.
Ralf Rangnick’s Austria beat the Netherlands 3-2 to top the group, with the Dutch taking third place.
France now faces the runner-up in Group E and shares the same half of the draw as Portugal, Spain, and Germany.
Mbappe, back in the lineup after breaking his nose, scored from the penalty spot after Jakub Kiwior fouled Ousmane Dembele in the box.
However, France relaxed, and a clumsy challenge from Dayot Upamecano gave Lewandowski a penalty. Mike Maignan initially saved Lewandowski’s effort, but it had to be retaken due to encroachment. Lewandowski scored on the second attempt.
Mbappe's goal, celebrated by removing his mask, was his 48th for France. Despite dominating with 58% possession and 19 shots, France couldn't secure the win.
Lukasz Skorupski performed well in the Polish goal. France, with only two goals in three group games, relies heavily on Mbappe, who is now one goal behind Michel Platini's French record of 14 in major tournaments. Ousmane Dembele has yet to score in a major tournament for France.
Deschamps knows his team must improve quickly to advance further in the competition.
