Messi prioritizes the Copa America before returning to Major League Soccer. Lionel Messi confirmed that he won't join Argentina's squad for the Paris Olympics, citing his age and the need to manage his participation in tournaments.

The 36-year-old Inter Miami forward is currently gearing up for Argentina's Copa America title defense, scheduled from June 20 to July 14 in the United States.

In February, under-23 manager Javier Mascherano extended an invitation to Messi to join the Olympic squad, recalling their past success at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

However, Messi explained to ESPN that considering the ongoing Copa America, committing to the Olympics would mean an extensive period away from his club commitments.

"It's hard to think about the Olympics right now," Messi shared. "It would be two, three straight months of not being with the club, and more than anything, I'm not at an age to be in everything. I have to choose carefully, and it would be too much to play two straight tournaments."

Reflecting on his past Olympic experience with Mascherano, Messi expressed gratitude, saying, "I've been very lucky to play in the Olympics, of winning it together with (Mascherano). It was a wonderful experience on a football level. Olympics, U20, memories I'll never forget."

The men's football tournament at the Olympics spans July and August, with teams allowed to include three overage players in their squads.
