At 20, Wharton is the second youngest player in Gareth Southgate’s Germany-bound squad and possesses the least top-tier experience.

Earlier this year, Wharton left his childhood club Blackburn in the Championship for Crystal Palace in the Premier League, quickly adapting to life in South London.

His impressive performance earned him a call-up to England’s June training squad, ultimately securing a spot in Southgate’s 26-man Euro roster.

Reflecting on his rapid rise, Wharton expressed, “It's surreal. Honestly, I wasn't expecting it. Just breaking into the Premier League, I didn't have high expectations. But I'm absolutely delighted. Playing on the top stage, you can't beat it.”

Wharton made his England Under-21 debut in March and made his senior debut as a substitute in this month’s friendly against Bosnia at St James’ Park.

Describing his journey, Wharton said, “It's hard to sum up. It's a dream come true. Every kid playing football dreams of Premier League and national team appearances. Starting with my childhood club was great, and now being here is incredible. It's been fast, but I wouldn't have it any other way.”

Wharton aims to build on his positive England debut, where he completed all 36 of his passes, showing confidence both on the field and in front of the media during England’s Blankenhain Castle press conference.

He expressed gratitude for his family's support, though he shrugged off his father's comment that he's "a bit of a loner." Wharton explained, “I grew up playing with my two older brothers, which toughened me up. My dad, a big football fan, always provides advice. Their support means everything.”

Responding to his father’s remark, Wharton said, “I think 'loner' is harsh. I keep to myself, always have. It works for me. Being a footballer means sacrifices, like missing out on weekends. I'm not the loudest, but that's just me.”
