Premier League: Chelsea Thrash Wolves in Six-Goal Thriller

  • 25/08/2024 - 19:08

This match was already buzzing before kick-off, thanks to Noni Madueke's quickly-deleted social media post where he labelled Wolverhampton the "worst place on Earth." If anything, it fired up the locals, but it was Chelsea who had the last laugh.

Chelsea struck first, just two minutes in, with Nico Jackson nodding in at the far post after a Cole Palmer corner was flicked on at the near post. Despite some decent passing sequences, Chelsea couldn't fully control the game and instead embraced a chaotic style that threatened Wolves repeatedly. Palmer even missed an easy chance after some good work by Madueke on the right wing.

However, familiar issues from last season resurfaced for Chelsea. A bad turnover in their own half allowed Wolves to equalise just before the half-hour mark. But Chelsea hit back in style right before halftime, with Jackson providing a brilliant touch and Palmer finishing with class to restore the lead. Yet, Wolves found time to equalise again from a set piece just before the whistle.

Chelsea didn't waste any time in the second half, with Madueke, who had been giving Ait-Nouri a tough time, putting them back in front just minutes in. From there, it was the Palmer and Madueke show, with the former setting up the latter for two more goals in quick succession as Chelsea tore Wolves apart.

Wolves, desperate to get back in the game, resorted to hacking and fouling, with Caicedo taking the brunt of it. They did manage to score a late goal, but the momentum was killed by an offside flag. Neto and Félix then combined to cap off the night with Chelsea's sixth goal, a lovely finish by Félix on his second debut.

As the home fans began to leave, Chelsea could have added more to the scoreline but wasted several promising counters. In the end, it was a dominant display by the Blues, who sent a clear message to the rest of the league.
