Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has committed his long-term future to the club, signing a new deal that will keep him at the Etihad until 2034. The nine-and-a-half-year contract is the longest in Premier League history, surpassing the nine-year deal Cole Palmer inked with Chelsea last summer.
Haaland, who joined City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, has been a prolific force, scoring 111 goals in 126 appearances. His previous contract, which reportedly included a release clause, was set to expire in 2027.
The new agreement secures the Norwegian’s services until his 34th birthday, solidifying City’s attack for the foreseeable future.
Haaland: "City Brings Out the Best in Me"
Speaking about his renewal, Haaland expressed his gratitude and excitement.
"I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club," said Haaland.
"Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters. It’s the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody."
He also thanked manager Pep Guardiola, the coaching staff, and his teammates for their support since his arrival.
City's Vision for the Future
City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain, emphasised the club's commitment to Haaland and the striker’s passion for the club.
"The fact he is signed for so long demonstrates our commitment to him as a player and his love for the club," Begiristain said.
Haaland’s contract renewal comes just two months after Guardiola himself extended his stay at City with a new two-year deal.
A Trophy-Laden Start
Since joining City, Haaland has already amassed an impressive haul of silverware, including two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Champions League, and the Super Cup. This season, he has netted 21 times in 28 matches, continuing his remarkable scoring record.
However, City currently sit 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool in the Premier League, having played one game more.
A Smart Move for City
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire hailed City’s decision to lock down Haaland as both "expensive" and "smart."
"Once you get into that last two years of a contract, the balance of power shifts to the player," Maguire told BBC Sport. "What City have here is a long-term commitment which protects Haaland's value in the market."
While clubs like Real Madrid may have eyed the Norwegian, the extended deal likely puts him out of reach for the Spanish giants.
"There are very few clubs that could afford Haaland," Maguire noted. "Real Madrid don’t need a striker anytime soon, Barcelona are in financial trouble, and PSG aren’t making big signings due to collapsed TV rights."
City's Future Amid Challenges
The announcement comes as Manchester City face a disciplinary case with the Premier League over 115 alleged breaches of financial rules. Despite the looming uncertainty, Haaland’s renewal highlights the club’s ambition to remain at the forefront of European football.
With Haaland’s long-term future secured, City’s quest for domestic and European dominance looks firmly on track.
