Gary Neville Calls for Manchester United Overhaul, Praises Liverpool's Dynamic Play
Gary Neville has demanded a "cultural overhaul" at Manchester United, labelling the current squad as "mediocre" following their dismal 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford. In stark contrast, he heaped praise on Liverpool, comparing their tactical fluidity to Sir Alex Ferguson's dominant United teams.
'United's Squad is Mediocre and Needs Change'
Speaking on his podcast, Neville was scathing in his assessment of United under manager Rúben Amorim.
"I think it's a massive positive that Amorim is seeing what he's got," Neville said. "But they are a mile away in every single way. Playing the way he wants, with the 3-4-3, he’s going to have to change it."
Neville acknowledged that while the players are trying their best, they simply aren't up to the standard required at Manchester United.
"It's not a personal assault, but they are not good enough to play for Manchester United," he added. "This club aims to be at the top, and it’s quite clear these players aren’t good enough."
Neville highlighted Amorim’s challenge in turning things around:
"He's got six months of a 'beauty parade'—or more like an 'ugly parade'—to see who’s worth keeping. But for United fans, this has been 10 years of the same. There has to be a cultural overhaul."
The defeat leaves United languishing in the bottom half of the table as Christmas approaches, a far cry from their expectations under new ownership and management.
Bournemouth Shine Under Iraola
Neville also praised Bournemouth and their manager, Andoni Iraola, for back-to-back wins at Old Trafford.
"Well done to Bournemouth. That’s two years on the bounce, and Iraola is doing a fantastic job," he said.
'Liverpool Remind Me of Ferguson's United'
Turning his attention to Liverpool, Neville lauded their 6-3 demolition of Tottenham, calling it a "performance of champions."
"There are bits of this Liverpool side that remind me of the Manchester United team I played in," Neville said.
He singled out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s crossing ability, comparing it to David Beckham’s deliveries, and praised the team’s ability to adapt their playing style mid-game.
"I see them playing three or four different styles within the same match. They can play long passes, counter-attack, defend deep, or press high—it’s whatever the game needs," Neville explained.
The former United defender was particularly impressed by Liverpool's midfield pairing of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, who controlled the tempo when needed.
"This Liverpool team has independent thinking. They know what the game needs and adapt. That’s the part that reminds me of us, and Liverpool are a lot better than I thought they’d be this season," he added.
Contrast in Fortunes
While Liverpool soar at the top of the Premier League, Manchester United face an uphill battle to salvage their season. Neville’s call for a cultural reset underlines the gulf between the two clubs, with one flourishing under dynamic tactics and the other floundering under a lack of identity.
