Premier League: Klopp Hopes Salah Stays Amid Contract Uncertainty

  • 14/01/2025 - 20:21

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has expressed his hope that Mohamed Salah will commit his future to the Reds as the Egyptian's contract saga continues. Salah’s current deal expires at the end of this season, leaving fans anxious about the prospect of losing their talisman.

Salah has been in sensational form this term, leading the Premier League with 31 goal involvements (18 goals, 13 assists). Of his goals, 16 have come in the second half, and only Salah himself has bettered that mark in a single campaign for Liverpool (18 in 2017-18). He also ranks third in shots (74) behind Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo, and his creativity shines with 38 chances created, seventh-highest in the league.

Klopp, now Red Bull's head of global soccer, spoke highly of Salah at a press conference:

"I hope he stays. He is the biggest striker Liverpool had in modern times – obviously, there were other good strikers, really good strikers! But a fantastic player, fantastic human being, outstanding athlete, and the best ambassador your country could have. I hope he will stay at Liverpool."

Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk Contracts Also in Focus

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are also in the final months of their Liverpool contracts. Alexander-Arnold, linked with Real Madrid, has faced criticism this season, particularly for his performance against Manchester United. Van Dijk, meanwhile, remains a cornerstone of the team's defence.

Klopp, who signed both players during his Liverpool tenure, remains a keen observer of their progress:

"I'm so happy they're doing well. There's 0.1% of me thinking I should still be there because they are doing so well. From my point of view, I hope all three extend, but they did not tell me."

Jürgen Klopp’s New Chapter at Red Bull

After departing Liverpool last season, Klopp began his new role with Red Bull on January 1. While joking about the possibility of signing Liverpool’s out-of-contract stars, Klopp added his trademark humour:

"Virgil, I'm sure, would love five more years at Liverpool – then 41, 42! Mo, we would have no chance to pay his wages. Trent? Yeah, then he can learn defending. It's so poor, really.

Despite no longer being at the helm, Klopp continues to keep a close eye on Liverpool, praising their progress under Arne Slot:

"It’s such good football, maybe the best-balanced team in the world right now. I’m just happy I’m not in charge to answer these questions!"

As Liverpool’s title charge continues, the futures of Salah, Alexander-Arnold, and Van Dijk remain pivotal talking points in what could be a defining season for the club.
