Manchester City returned to their scintillating best on Sunday, thrashing Ipswich Town 6-0 at Portman Road to leap back into the Premier League’s top four.
Phil Foden was the star of the show, bagging two goals and providing an assist during an electric first-half performance that left Ipswich chasing shadows. City’s emphatic victory lifts them to 38 points, level with Newcastle but ahead on goal difference. However, they still trail leaders Liverpool by 12 points, with the Reds holding a game in hand.
Doku, Foden, and De Bruyne Run Riot
Ipswich had a bright start with a couple of chances, but once City broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, there was no way back for the hosts. Jeremy Doku linked up beautifully with Kevin De Bruyne, who slipped the ball to Foden. The England international took a touch before unleashing a precise strike to open the scoring.
Just three minutes later, City doubled their lead. Doku, a constant menace down the left, found Foden again, who set up Mateo Kovacic to drill home from the edge of the box.
City’s relentless pressure paid off again in the 42nd minute as Foden notched his second of the game. His low shot squirmed under Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton, extending City’s advantage before the break.
Relentless City in the Second Half
There was no respite for Ipswich after the restart. Doku added his name to the scoresheet with a smart finish just four minutes into the second half. The Belgian winger wasn’t done yet, turning provider for Erling Haaland, who calmly slotted home to make it 5-0.
City’s dominance was capped in the 69th minute when substitute James McAtee looped a header into the net, sealing a commanding win and delighting coach Pep Guardiola on the sidelines.
Pep’s Men Back in Form
Guardiola praised his team’s performance, particularly their attacking cohesion. "This was the City I know," he said. "Phil [Foden], Jeremy [Doku], and Kevin [De Bruyne] were unstoppable today."
The result will give City fans renewed hope as they aim to chase down Liverpool, Arsenal, and Nottingham Forest at the top of the table. For Ipswich, who remain 18th with 16 points, the defeat highlighted the gap in quality they must bridge to compete against the league’s elite.
