Manchester City Launch Legal Battle Against Premier League
In a bold move, Manchester City has initiated legal action against the Premier League, marking an unprecedented turn in their ongoing dispute. The club has filed a lawsuit aimed at challenging the Premier League's Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules and seeking compensation.
According to reports from the Times, a two-week private arbitration hearing is set to commence on Monday, highlighting City's determination to contest the league's regulations.
The APT rules were introduced in response to Newcastle's Saudi Arabia-led takeover in December 2021, aiming to prevent clubs from engaging in commercial deals with entities connected to their ownership at inflated prices.
City, whose sponsors include companies linked to the United Arab Emirates, including Etihad Airways, argue that these laws unfairly discriminate against them.
In a 165-page legal document, City presents themselves as victims of discrimination and challenges the validity of the regulations. The club filed their claim on February 16, inviting other Premier League clubs to participate in the legal proceedings.
City accuses their rivals of approving the laws with the intent to impede their success and alleges discrimination against Gulf ownership.
This legal battle adds to City's ongoing confrontation with the Premier League, with another hearing scheduled for November. This separate dispute revolves around allegations of 115 breaches of the Premier League's regulations and Financial Fair Play rules, spanning from the 2009-10 to the 2017-18 seasons. The charges include failure to provide accurate financial information and reports, as well as non-cooperation with league investigations.
City vehemently denies all allegations, emphasizing their commitment to legal transparency and fairness. The November hearing, expected to last six weeks, carries significant consequences, including potential fines, points deductions, or further sanctions for Pep Guardiola's side.
