Manchester United parts ways with Erik ten Hag due to poor performance, appointing Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager.
Manchester United have sacked manager Erik ten Hag after a disappointing start to the season, with his final game a 2-1 defeat to West Ham that left United sitting 14th in the Premier League table. With only three wins in their first nine league games, the club’s recent form has forced the board to make a change.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined United as Ten Hag’s assistant last summer, will take over as interim manager as the club searches for a permanent replacement.
The decision comes just three months after United triggered a one-year extension in Ten Hag’s contract following his FA Cup victory over Manchester City. Hired in the summer of 2022, Ten Hag guided United to third place in his first Premier League season and secured the club’s first silverware in six years by defeating Newcastle 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final. However, his second season faltered with a poor start in both domestic and European competitions, including United’s bottom-place finish in their Champions League group.
Despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos group buying a 27.7% stake in the club in December 2023 and Ratcliffe pointing to deeper structural issues at United, the board ultimately decided a managerial change was necessary. Van Nistelrooy now steps in to steady the team while the search for United's sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson continues.
