Manchester United’s struggles continued as Bruno Fernandes saw red in their 2-0 loss to Wolves at Molineux, marking Wolves' second straight win under new manager Vítor Pereira.
Fernandes Sees Red Again
Fernandes, United’s captain, was sent off for the third time this season after picking up a second yellow card just two minutes into the second half. The Portuguese midfielder had previously been dismissed against Tottenham and Porto earlier in the campaign.
Wolves capitalised on their numerical advantage in the 56th minute when Matheus Cunha scored directly from a corner, the second such goal United have conceded in two games. Cunha’s curling effort sailed over Andre Onana, who failed to deal with the crowded six-yard box.
The game was put to bed in added time when Wolves launched a counterattack. Cunha unselfishly squared the ball to Hwang Hee-chan, who tapped in to secure a 2-0 victory.
United's Fragile Defence Exposed Again
Rúben Amorim’s side has now lost five of their last seven matches in all competitions. Defending set-pieces continues to be a glaring weakness, with opponents repeatedly exploiting United’s frailty in the box.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana, though generally solid, has struggled to command his area during critical moments, evoking memories of David de Gea’s early career missteps. His backup, Altay Bayındır, fared no better in similar situations.
Adding to United’s woes, Manuel Ugarte will also miss their next match after picking up his fifth booking of the season.
Cunha Shines for Wolves
Matheus Cunha delivered a standout performance, showcasing both skill and composure. His cleverly taken corner goal wasn’t his first attempt; he had tried a similar trick earlier in the game.
"I was shooting, we train to shoot," Cunha said post-match.
Wolves manager Pereira heaped praise on the Brazilian:
"He’s a player with incredible quality. His creativity and unselfishness are key to our success. We need players like him to reach high standards in this league."
Cunha’s tally now stands at 10 goals this season, and his ability to create opportunities was evident as he set up Hwang’s late goal with a perfectly timed pass.
Amorim Under Pressure
Rúben Amorim’s stint at United has been anything but smooth. With seven points from six league games, the 39-year-old is facing mounting scrutiny. His decision to stick with Fernandes as captain, despite his disciplinary issues, is drawing criticism.
United now sit just eight points above the relegation zone. Upcoming fixtures against Newcastle and Liverpool could determine whether this season’s struggles become a full-blown crisis.
For now, dark humour about relegation battles at Old Trafford remains a joke—but it’s one that’s wearing thin.
