Premier League: "The Special One" Will Not Return To The League

  • 10/01/2025 - 08:40

Jose Mourinho will not be taking over at Everton, despite being briefly touted as a frontrunner for the job following Sean Dyche's dismissal.

The Portuguese manager, famously known as "The Special One," was linked with the position after Everton's new owners, The Friedkin Group, decided to part ways with Dyche just hours before their FA Cup clash against Peterborough. However, Mourinho's troubled history with Friedkin co-owner Dan Friedkin—who sacked him during his time at Roma—has reportedly ruled him out of contention.

Mourinho’s Fallout with Friedkin

Mourinho's tenure at Roma ended on a sour note last year, with the manager publicly criticising Friedkin's football knowledge after his dismissal. This history makes a reunion at Everton unlikely, despite Mourinho's well-documented desire to return to English football.

In October, Mourinho expressed his love for England, saying:

"I had three clubs in England, so four different periods I've coached in England, and I love it. My family lives in London. London is home, so one day I have to be back, unless no one wants me."

Currently managing Turkish side Fenerbahce, where his team sits second in the league, Mourinho has his hands full, despite recent complaints about officiating in the Turkish Super Lig.

Dyche's Struggles at Goodison Park

Sean Dyche’s tenure at Everton came to an end with the club languishing in 16th place, just a point above the relegation zone. Frustration among fans grew over both results and the team’s style of play.

Before his dismissal, Dyche himself hinted that the club might be considering his replacement, saying the ownership should be looking forward.

What’s Next for Everton?

Former manager David Moyes and Brentford’s Thomas Frank have emerged as potential candidates to replace Dyche. For now, Under-18s head coach Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman will take

charge in a caretaker capacity.

In a club statement, Everton confirmed the departure of Dyche and his coaching staff, stating:

"Everton Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as Senior Men’s First Team Manager with immediate effect."

While Mourinho's name brought a spark of speculation, Everton now appears focused on finding a manager capable of both rebuilding the squad and meeting the expectations of their ambitious new owners.
